In Germany there is an Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde / Ausländeramt) in almost every administrative district (Landkreis) and in the urban municipalities. These authorities are responsible for enforcing laws concerning foreign nationals. There are also federal states, where larger cities, which belong to a district (Kreis), have Immigration Offices. The Residence Act for foreign nationals is a state law, not a federal law.
