Information about stay abroad

Your permanent residency is the country in which you resided and lived your social and professionalife before the start of the trip. If you are a foreign national with your permanent residency in Germany/Austria, you may take out insurance for your stay outside of Germany/Austria.

If the exact date of entry/departure [start of the trip] is not known, please select the expected date of entry/departure.
The country in which you lived and in which your main social and professional life was is considered to be your permanent place of residency before the start of the trip. If you are a foreign national and maintain permanent residency in Germany or Austria, you can insure yourself outside Germany or Austria.
Permanent residency
According to our definition, permanent residency exists if the person is not only temporarily staying at the chosen travel destination, but settles there and also stays there permanently. A person who stays at the chosen destination only for educational purposes (e.g. for language courses, a course of study, further education courses) does not yet hold permanent residency there for this reason alone.

What is meant by “permanent residency”?
We exclude insurability if there is permanent residency in the country of destination. This is due to the fact that in the plans in which the term appears, we offer foreign travel health insurance and thus provide insurance coverage during a temporary stay abroad. A temporary stay no longer exists, however, if there is permanent residency in the country of destination.

Examples:1
No permanent residency in Germany
Person A travels from Nigeria to Germany. He takes part in a language course at a language school in Germany and subsequently completes a course of study. He has a training/education visa for the period of the stay and temporarily stays in Germany for training/education purposes. After completing his studies, he receives a job offer from Nigeria and returns to his home country.

Permanent residency in Germany
Person B travels from India to Germany. He studied in Germany and is looking for a job in Germany. He met and married his wife in Germany. His wife is pregnant and expecting their first child. His parents sell their house in India and also move to Germany to live with their son. Person B moves his main life completely to Germany.

Excluded from this are our Care Student private health insurance plan for students as well as our statutory health insurance coverage via DAK-Gesundheit.

Our definition is analogous to and based up § 5 of the BaföG (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz, the Federal Training Assistance Act).
This reads as follows:
(1) Permanent residency in the sense of this law is established at the place which is not only temporarily the center of living relations, without the will to settle permanently being important; whoever stays at a place merely for the purpose of education has not established his permanent residency there. ¹ The above examples are fictitious cases. An examination of the permanent residency always takes place on a case-by-case basis.
The country in which you will mainly reside during the duration of coverage is to be selected under “country of destination.”

Place of residency before the start of the trip

Your permanent residency is the country in which you had your main place of residency the last two years before commencing the trip. If you are a foreign national with your permanent residency in Germany/Austria, you may take out insurance for your stay outside of Germany/Austria.

Country of destination

Select as the country of destination the country in which you will mainly be residing during the duration of the insurance coverage.

If the exact date of entry/departure (start of the trip) is not known, please select the anticipated date of entry/departure.It is possible and easy to postpone the commencement of coverage in writing (via mail, fax or email) before the coverage begins.
For travel to Germany: Date when you first entered Germany. Please note that you may only take out foreign travel health insurance coverage for a maximum of 5 years, including prior insurance coverage with another insurer, as the case may be. The insurance coverage is for temporary stays in Germany, meaning you do not intend to stay in Germany for a longer period of time or on a permanent basis. For this type of insurance, a maximum duration of coverage of 60 months is permitted by German law (taking similar policies into account, including policies with other insurers).

Liability insurance protects you against claims for damages from third parties.
Accident insurance protects you against the financial consequences of a decline in your ability to work due to disability or death following an accident.

Children are not criminally liable to the end of their 7th year of life. Therefore, liability insurance coverage at the S rate is not possible. They can be insured at the M and XL rates, however only with accident insurance coverage.

Due to administrative reasons, the minimum premium at the S rate is EUR 10, at the M rate EUR 12 and at the XL rate EUR 15.

The premium for the entire duration of coverage must be paid all at once in advance.

For terms of several years you have the option of first taking out coverage for a shorter period of time and then – before the insurance term applied for expires – to request an extension for the remaining period. For technical reasons, the extension must be treated as a new application and the minimum premium will also apply once again to the extension period. When splitting periods, make sure you adhere to the minimum premium in every period.

In the case that many terms of coverage have been paid in advance, a refund of the too many paid annual premiums is possible with a premature cancellation.

You can only pay the premium for the liability insurance/accident-liability insurance on a monthly basis if you have selected direct debit monthly as your payment method/frequency and have chosen at least 6 months as the duration of insurance coverage.
